Ben Wildman

Ben is originally from Newcastle and is definitely part of the Xplore collective even if not with us this year. He is working in Nottingham and we think he's a pretty incredible evangelist.

Settle back with your tea or coffee, a notepad, pen (and maybe a Geordie dictionary) and enjoy listening to Ben introducing us to Evangelism.

Leaders Guide

Hello Leader!

Firstly a huge thanks for facilitating your group.  You are wonderful.

During the group discussion about this week's teaching, you're looking to instill in your group that regurgitating the teaching is really not what we're looking for.  Instead prompt them to share what the Holy Spirit highlighted to them, what do they not understand, what has it made them think of in terms of linking with other scriptures, other stories.  Dont be afraid of asking what they didnt like about it too, what offended them - sometimes God uses our 'offence' as a way of speaking to us just as much as the stuff that we agree with!

Below are the same notes given to everyone to accompany the teaching.  Do use them and use the questions in your discussion if that is helpful, equally please follow the holy spirit!

The main aim is - WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO ABOUT IT! Get them to give specific things that they will do this week in response to the teaching.  Get them to say when they'll do it, and then get the rest of the group to ask them about it during the week on whatsapp.  Accountability is a beautiful thing!

What makes you passionate about evangelism?

The passage Ben refers to is 2 Corinthians 5v14- 21

14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!

18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: be reconciled to God.

21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Everybody ministers - Everybody matters.

Motivated by the 4 Cs

Is evangelism an obligation or a motivation for me, what impact does that have on my feelings and on my relationships?

What would help you decrease obligation?

How do you react to Ben's 4Cs?

What is irresistible about God for you?

Stop for the One and stop for the one in front of you.

Walk a lifestyle that has

  • love for God

  • love for others

A lifestyle that is from him

  • in life

  • In relationships

A lifestyle that acts from love that listens to God and then do what He says.

Copy Jesus

- Heart for the lost

- Spend time with people

- Get out among people

- Spoke about the Kingdom of God

- Ate with people

- Asked people questions

- Did life with people

- Allowed people to interrupt him and his plans and life

Have I got the time to invest in others like Jesus?

Where will I change my day/week/month to begin to allow myself to copy Jesus?

What part of copying Jesus will you try for the next month?

Creating rhythms and margins

Pray, Play, Say, Stay.

The passage Ben used for rhythms and margins is Colossians 4v2-6

2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.

4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

5 Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone

Pray for open doors (The rhythm)

Pray for clarity as you communicate what you need to say (The margin)

When the door opens take the opportunity to share

Play - have fun, go through the open door in different ways

Just take the next step

Say - Be like salt that adds flavour to the world and a taste that lasts

1 Peter 3v15

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Stay - close to God and close to the person. Grow the relationship

What margins look like for Ben

- Chatting while walking to events (like football training)

- Chatting while eating together

- Inviting people to church

- Asking questions of people

- Building relationships

- Make it natural (for you and for them)

- Caught not taught

- Its not one size fits all

- Use the bible and what God says

The six step guide by Ben!

  1. it starts with Jesus

  2. Be intentional

  3. Build a real relationship

  4. Get the bible open, speak what it says

  5. Go on a journey with people

  6. Multiply - That they do what you do

What is it I think evangelism is and is it something I do/will do?

What does being an Ambassador mean (the type Ben referred to?

What resonated with you, bothered you, excited you from this weeks teaching?

What has stirred in you that you can bring to your Xplore group this week?

What is your next step?

What is your prayer and encouragement for Ben and how will you let him know?
